GravityDex Still Rules

Once upon a time (March, 2000) one ski bum asked another ski bum how a few HTML tags worked. Two weeks later GravityDex (Outdoor Sports Directory) was functional and on the web. It’s always been a human-maintained outdoor links database, with custom descriptions and outdoor-relevant categories. It’s continued to grow through the years steadily (at time of this post, the links database included 13,348 links in 1,073 categories).

>> If you have an outdoor related site, Add Your Link <<

In the last few years, “The Dex” expanded to also include a comprehensive gear & apparel clearing house; including outdoor gear deals of all kinds, and product catalogs from the top outdoor retailers on the web (new stores added regularly). One of the coolest things about this site, is that it allows you to subscribe to RSS feeds for daily gear deals. By now you should know that there are tons of promotions out there, or coupons….so it pays to know where to find them all when you’re gearing up.

Check it out! Search GravityDex Links or Gear Database:

Pretty Slick - Outdoor Gear Engine

Would you find a search engine specific to outdoor gear useful? I’ll bet you would, since like us, you’re probably a gear junkie. And you’re probably not into paying retail, like us. On this site I just did a search for North Face Denali (probably the single most popular fleece jacket in history, and definitely The North Face’s top selling product), and the site returned 285 results from about 20 online stores. At that point I sorted the price column and was able to get a look at the best deals on this product. All this took about 8 seconds.

So check out our friends at OutdoorGearEngine.com. According to their homepage (as of the date of this post), the database consists of 495,132 products from 70 outdoor stores. Damn skippy. That’s pretty sick. This site is also chalk full of RSS subscriptions for outdoor gear deals, and they also maintain a blog that features industry news, gear sales/coupons from participating stores and just random coolness. Have a look and gear up for the pow!

Fall Meets Winter in Alta

Had to share…

Autumn in Alta

AltaCam Ramping Up

As is evident from our sidebar links on the homepage, Altacam.com is a site owned by the GravityFed Network. This site is sanctioned and supported directly by the Alta Ski Lift Co., and includes all kinds of killer Utah skiing related content including our renown Ski Forum, the AltaCam Podcast Series, the monthly (in the winter months, anyway) ski photo contest, custom ski gear reviews and even a ski catalog, powered by Backcountry.com.

AltaCam has been around for quite some time, originally owned and operated by Tom and Trudy Truss (brother/sister), from the old and rootsy T&T Bike & Ski shop that was located at the base of Little Cottonwood Canyon, in their garage. Not sure what Trudy is up to these days, but last I knew she was living in Oregon. I still see Tom destroying the powder and laughing on those Alta bluebird pow days we all know and love.

At any rate, we’re laying out the production schedule for AltaCam now, as the season is quickly approaching. In fact, the Wasatch mountain tops are white with a fresh blanket of new snow now! We’re going to meet up with Connie Marshall (Alta PR Director) on October 20th to go over our site’s production schedule, and gear up for another killer season. So stay tuned, Altafarians.

The (content migration) Process

We have a crap load of content archived @ GravityFed. Some of it’s accessible right now, some of it isn’t. The plan is to migrate all the original articles, interviews, galleries, news, etc. to the new Wordpress layout…which should be challenging to say the least.

Just today we messed with the header and footer a bit, to remove the generic place holders that came with this theme.

From the first post on the new Wordpress CMS, we linked up the navigation as it stood before this new site upgrade. Soon enough, you’ll see these same sections of the site morphed into Wordpress, some killer new features, and ranting here regularly about GravityFed back in the day, as well as our lives as they stand now as retired ski bums ;) Actually, semi-retired with plans to make a come back sooner rather than later. Me thinks it’s quite impossible to ever fully retire from skibumhood.

In the meantime, why not watch “Dirt Spineology” with Sage, Matt Collins and Tyler Knoles. Shame on you if you thought these guys were skiers only. Enjoy…

The New GravityFed

GravityFed.com

Well how about that. The GravityFed network has a new site! Welcome to the new GravityFed, powered by Wordpress. We’re going to use this killer content management system to re-introduce some of the most rootsy, ski bum articles ever.

The main categories of the site are still there, we’re just going through a re-make on the site. These categories include:

In 1999 Alta locals helped create a media outlet, starting with skier portfolios. We soon became an expression of ski bum lifestyle, and still feature creative writing, world-class photography and a gear marketplace.
