Julian Carr GravityFed's Interview with Julian Carr

GFed: Looking back over your career, what can you say about your scariest moment skiing?

I shattered my femer in 11 or so pieces in the winter of '01 - immediately after it happened my leg was draped wet noodle style across my chest - as I grabbed it and realigned it straight down my body the only thing I could think of was that I could be paralyzed - I wasn't. But those 2 seconds were the scariest for sure - then I said to myself "move your toes" - I did thank god.

GFed: How about your best moment?

Just a couple weeks ago - Dec 4 2004. I cleanly aired a 150 footer in Wolverine Cirque (the one Jamie Pierre hits in 'High Life'). Skis stayed on and fluidly got back on my feet after putting it to my side - no digging out of a bombhole. So stoked - I yelled so loud on the outrun I was cracking eggs in Zimbabwe. 2 days before that I was able to pull a front flip off an 85 footer - skis stayed on. 2 days before that I was able to pull 13 front flips off of 4 different 30 - 50 footers. Plus good skiing amidst all of this. So basically my best moment was the week of November 29 2004 to December 4 2004. All of this was on film and photogs too.

GFed: Where is your favorite place to ski? Why?

Anywhere Anytime

GFed: Where is your favorite place to just chill out?

Tram Deck on a sunny spring day after charging all day or w/ good friends or Family or w/ a intelligent athletic girl that is good looking as well.

GFed: What is your Top 10 Skiing Gear List?

Smith Fuse Goggles, Spyder Snorkel Jacket, Smith Cassius Sunglasses, Smith Prodigy Goggles, Smith T-shirts, Pro-tec back protector, Pro-tec padded shorts, Rossignol B3's, Rossignol Scratch BC's, Spyder Down Jacket, Smith goggle shammy

GFed: Nascar or Formula 1?

F1

GFed: Tell us about your latest road trip or your next planned big trip:

On December 19th 2004 I am going with Ben Wheeler, Ash Christianson, Josh Madsen, and Photographer Will Wissman to Whistler for shooting and we have Helicopter time. We are staying right in the village and I have never been in a heli so I can't wait.

GFed: What are you looking forward to this coming winter (2004-05 ski season)? What's your focus?

My realistic and conditions allowing focus is a 90 footer to 90 footer to 40 footer triple line I have scoped. My dream goal is to take down the 240 footer w/ Pierre in Targee. Overall I just want to shoot w/ a variety of photographers and filmers and try to work hard and just have fun.

GFed: Alta or Snowbird?

Interesting question. I have had a pass at the Bird for going on 5 years now - but I got on the permanantly banned list during this past summer. I had a meeting w/ Pat Shugart over the past summer and had a good talk - results are he and ski patrol have given me a year off. So this year I have a pass from Alta and Brighton. I had only skied Alta maybe 30 or so times until this year and I have really been enjoying it. The mountain gets you in shape because of all the traversing and it is nice getting to know new terrain and new people. Brighton is cool because being one of the few skiers over there - most the stuff I like to ski doesn't get touched by the snowboarders - There is a crazy scene over there - lots of duders duding it. I just miss riding w/ Parker, Tyler, and Walker at the bird.

GFed: You have started a Company called 'DISCRETE' - tell us about that:

It is a headwear company right now w/ 8 different styles of beanies, brimmed beanies, hats, headbands, T-shirts, and hoodies. I have a snowboard team and a ski team. Snowboard team consists of some well known locals of the 'Batwing' crew amongst others like Ash Christianson and Tim Ronan. On the skiing side I have some heavy hitters like Jamie Pierre, JT Holmes, Bedford, Barlow, Rob Greener, and other sick locals like Tyler Knowles. Check out www.discretedomepiece.com I will have advertising next year in the mags so look out! Discrete Domepiece Fool!
