The Completely Biased Review...

Category: Eyewear
Photos: Sam Hamilton

An often overlooked but highly important piece of gear in any outdoor activity, eyewear of today can have more to offer than meets the eye. I recently tested out a few different "eye protection systems" from Native Eyewear and I was quite surprised at how far sunglasses have come. How would I describe these products in one sentence? Functional eyewear with options and style. Of course one sentence would not do these glasses justice, so I will continue.
The Low Ryder is one of Native Eyewear's more popular models and it is easy to see why. With other glasses, my biggest pet peeve is having them fog up or fall off, forcing me to stop whatever I'm doing. Native Eyewear combats these problems with their MW-23 Venting System and Interchangeable Temple Kit. I took these shades with me on multiple skiing, hiking and biking trips and I can honestly say that the lenses only slightly fogged once (I've excused this instance based on the fact that I sweat like I'm on fire and I was hiking up a thirty-five degree pitch with skis on my back). As far as keeping them secured to my face, the interchangeable temple kit, with interchange keys, allowed me to easily switch the standard arms with arms that have a strong sports band securely attached. With some embarrassment, I must admit that with the sports band securely in place, the Low Ryder shades stayed on me while cart wheeling end over end during a skiing mishap.
Quality Eyewear with customizing alternatives is the best way to describe the Nano and Nano 2. Like the Low Ryder, both of these sunglasses are designed with integral anti-fog vents and polarized lenses. What set them apart from the Low Ryder are the interchangeable lenses. For example, I like to ski and bike at night as well as during the day, and at night I simply swapped my darker lenses for the clear crystal lenses. While the interchangeable lenses are sold separately (19.99 - 39.99), it is still more economical than purchasing a whole new pair. What also impressed me about the Nano and the Nano 2, as opposed to the Low Ryder, is that the lenses used are rimless, with an unobstructed 240-degree wrap around view. Unblocked peripheral vision is important when sharing the terrain with other skiers or bikers. Overall, I thought the Nano and Nano 2 glasses performed very well.
From a medical point of view, the impact resistant polarized lenses (used in all Native Sport Sunglasses) are the most important feature, protecting your eyes from harmful ultra violet light and unsuspecting trail hazards (i.e. branches, rocks, etc.). You are only equipped with one pair of eyes, so be proactive and take measures to protect them!
My single criticism is that the interchangeable temple kit is not available for all models. However, I would certainly refer active people to Native Eyewear. I believe that Native Eyewear's designs are comfortable, functional, and even stylish. Most important though, they stand behind their products with a lifetime guarantee.
Native Eyewear offers an extensive line of sunglasses besides the few I was lucky enough to test.

These specs are incredible!! If you have polarized, you know what I mean. If you don't, you gotta give it a try. Polarization cuts glare, makes everything much clearer and it will help reduce eye fatigue. The rubber temples and eye pads are an excellent addition....they give a great non-slip fit.
