The Completely Biased Review...

Beyond Gravity opens with a series of shots that compose not only this particular film but the world of climbing in general. From the sun hitting an icicle to exhausted fingertips surrendering to a 15-foot fall, the elements of climbing cover a vast range from organic to inanimate, physical to psychological. Through the different categories of climbing Beyond Gravity invites us to experience this world and the factors that inspire its devotees.
Beyond Gravity does a nice job of showing the different styles of climbing in a variety of spectacular settings. It gives them all equal treatment and exposure. The soundtrack is the least impressive aspect of the movie, but the narration works to enhance the psychological involvement of the climbers instead. Most of them describe their mental state while climbing as a trance. They must overcome the challenges of physical and mental adversity that make up a climb.
