Here's the same map that Danette created for the invitations. I wanted to add a couple of things on this page to simplify your trip to Alta once you arrive in the Salt Lake City area. On the bottom of this page I've also included step-by-step driving directions that I took from Mapquest.com. It's all pretty simple. Just remember that Salt Lake City streets are based on a grid pattern starting at 0, 0 from the church temple downtown. You won't have to worry too much about this grid as you'll be accessing the canyon from an interstate, most likely. But just so you are aware, the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon (where Alta is located) is approximately 9400 South and 3000 East on this grid. The Wasatch Mountains are on the east side of the Salt Lake Valley, so if you get lost just look for the big mountains to the east and drive that way! It's funny because that is how I found my way around here for the first year I lived in Utah :)

Danette & Gary's Alta Wedding - Location Map

Here's some things to remember when navigating this map:
  • I-215 is the belt route that surrounds the city. The only semi-confusing part is getting on I-215 S from the airport. When exciting the airport, you have to merge onto I-80 E toward OGDEN/PROVO at first... then shortly after merge onto I-215 S via exit 117 toward PARK CITY/PROVO.
  • Once on I-215 S, you'll travel about 16 miles... south at first, then wrapping around to the east, then north for a very short period until you see Exit 6 (6200 South or Wasatch Blvd).
  • When you get close to Exit 6, you'll begin to see signs for the ski areas. Once you see these signs it's pretty simple to follow them right up to Alta.
  • There are two canyons on the Wasatch Front that have ski resorts. Big Cottonwood Canyon and Little Cottonwood Canyon. You'll want to follow signs to Little Cottonwood Canyon...Snowbird or Alta. Both of these ski resorts are in Little Cottonwood Canyon.
  • Once you start heading up Wasatch Blvd you'll soon enter the mouth of the Little Cottonwood Canyon. You'll be able to tell especially if you're traveling up during the day.
  • Once you start up the canyon you'll see a sign for Wasatch National Forest. Once you pass this sign you're home free because there are no turn offs. The road simply ends at the top of the canyon (8-10 miles straight up!). There's one bypass road at Snowbird entry four but stay straight on Highway 210.
  • You'll pass Snowbird (there are four separate entries), then, as the road begins to level out, you'll see a sign that says 'Town of Alta'.
  • The Peruvian Lodge is the first lodge in town (it will be on your right soon after you pass the Town of Alta sign). You can't miss it.
Here's the Mapquest instructions exactly as they were presented to me when I did a search for driving directions from the SLC International Airport to Wasatch Blvd & E Little Cottonwood Rd:
  1. From the airport exit, merge onto I-80 E toward OGDEN/PROVO, 1.56 Miles
  2. Merge onto I-215 S via exit number 117 toward PARK CITY/PROVO, 16.05 Miles
  3. Take the 6200 S exit (exit number 6) toward SKI AREAS/SOLITUDE/BRIGHTON/SNOWBIRD/ALTA, .24 Miles
  4. Take the ramp toward SKI AREAS/SOLITUDE/BRIGHTON/SNOWBIRD/ALTA, .13 Miles
  5. Turn RIGHT onto UT-190 E/ E 6200 S Continue to follow UT-190 E, 1.66 Miles
  6. Stay straight to go onto WASATCH BLVD/ UT-210, 2.21 Miles
  7. Once on UT-210 it's straight up the road until you hit Town of Alta.
